Feeding and Nutrition :: Feeding them Veggies

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

How should I feed them veggies. Should I feed them veggies when it's their feeding time? I plan on starting to feed them in separate containers separately because when I would feed them in the tank one of them would eat everything before the other one could get any. Thing is I don't just want to throw in some lettuce or carrots in the tank cause that would lead to it getting dirty. I was thinking about laying some veggies on the turtle dock and just let them get them theirselves.

If you put the veggies on the dock, they will just drag them into the water. RES need to be in the water to eat. If you are worried about the tank becoming dirty, the use the separate container. They can be fed their veggies with their pellets, or you can do it in two feedings, your choice. Just be sure to give them time to eat the veggies.

I periodically throw a leaf of romaine lettuce on the water. It floats, so anything that Sheba doesn't eat, I can just scoop out with my hands when she is done.

If I feed pellets, I feed Sheba in a separate container because those can definitely make the water stinky.

I usually throw in a fresh piece of lettuce every few days, and every second day (his veggie days) I'll give him a "meal" of veggies. Recently it's been mostly pumpkin xD

Just let the veggies float in the water. I haven't really found that greens make a mess unless they've been in the water so long that they get mushy and fall apart.

Does the lettuce need to be cut up so they can eat it or will they rip pieces off? Willie wont eat the lettuce, she just looks at it. I tried carrots and she eats a little but not much. On rare occasions I give her a little peice of banana and she loves it. Can they eat raddishes??

You don't have to cut up the lettuce.

Carrots should be cooked & you can mince them for little turtles.

I find that sweet potato is something that mine LOVES. I boil the potato & it is easy to feed them because it is soft after cooking. AND I freeze small portions & thaw a little bit here or there so it lasts longer.

I don't know about radishes....never tried that. Might be kinda tough. There are plenty of other foods you can try besides that.

How big are they? I've sometimes ripped up a leave of lettuce in half or thirds if the turtles were smaller, especially with romaine (and I take out any big stalks, leaving the green).

I've never cooked carrots, I've just made really thing peels that looked like worms and which can easily be ripped apart, and given my turtles those. I do lightly steam veggies like pumpkin, squash, yams (which they had today) and cut them into small pieces that can be easily eaten.

I don't think I'd bother with radishes, or give them very often. And I'd give banana rarely as well (and not much of it if I did)---it's high in phosphorus.

Too much is not good, as too much of anything isn't good. The average turtle diet often contains more than enough phosphorus, so why add something that contains a lot of it (and a lot of sugar) on a regular basis? An ongoing imbalance between phosphorus and calcium (too much phosphorus relative to calcium) will inhibit calcium absorption. But if your turtle has a balanced diet with variety in it, you shouldn't have to worry. :) I've given a few slivers to my RES on occasion.)

Makes sense, thank you for the explination. As you know i do have that banana plant, and to be honest, the turtles could give a crap about it... But i'll be keeping my eyes on it to see if they ever touch it, and if so i'll remove it... The bananas are tiny, but i dont wanna harm my girls.

My guys get veggies (romaine, carrots, green bell peppers are their favorites) every morning. At the end of the day, I take out whatever is left, usually just a nub, then start over the next morning.....
