Feeding and Nutrition :: Awkward Fish Death

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

This evening when I came into my room, Sheldon had Fishy pinned under the filter. I shooshed him away and Fishy scooted out from under the filter. He was bleeding. Sheldon got him in the eye. Sheldon chased him and before I got Fishy to safety, he bit his mouth. Fishy stopped moving. I scooped him out and he was definitely dead. I flushed poor Fishy.

As of late they had been getting on each other nerves so perhaps this was coming eventually. The bigger question is, do I need to be concerned that Sheldon not only didn't understand how to kill Fishy or is this some sort of behavior problem? After all for a feeder fish, Fishy lived for 3 months before he was attacked. More worrisome is, does Sheldon have anger issues? Am I not feedng him enough?

Sheldon might have been taking his time. My male RES would target the head of larger prey, then eat at his own pace.

Ah I see. But why would Sheldon ignore Fishy for 3 months and then go after him? Is that weird?

Fishy probably messed up. Stuff like this is only a matter of time.

I kind of figured but I wanted to be sure. I think fish will be off the menu at our house for awhile.

I lost 4 fish in my tank the other day. I forgot to turn on the auto feeder for 2 days and Fred decided to go hunting.
I notice that the fish get used to the turtle after a while and are less cautious around him. I think that's when a couple go missing.

Fishy was definitely getting complacent. He'd swoop in while Sheldon was munching on pellets or lettuce. He'd swat him away. Now at the time that he cornered Fishy, he wasn't eating (and the lights were off) but perhaps the fish just pushed his luck.
