Feeding and Nutrition :: Freeze dried vs. frozen vs. fresh

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Wondering about the differences between feeding Trevor things like freeze dried cranberries (which come in the prepared turtle food I buy from petstore) vs. frozen cranberries/blueberries (purchased from grocery store in bags, which I'd thaw out before giving to him) or just fresh cranberries/blueberries? :?

I'm guessing fresh would be best...but is sometimes hard to find, and wondering how much nutritional value is lost when the fruit is freeze dried or frozen?

Thanks!

Also- my nephew dropped half a hard boiled egg into Trevor's tank this morning, without me knowing. By the time I got the truth out of Carson as to where the rest of his breakfast went if HE didn't eat it (I was assuming he gave it to the dog)...there is no trace of the egg in Trevor's tank...I'm guessing Trevor ate it. Is that ok or should I be worried? Trevor doesn't seem to be acting differently... :?:

Frozen only has minimal nuetrient loss, so no worries there...

As for the egg - I feed my turtles eggs a few times a month. Yolks are a bit rich for them and will cause them to get tubby if you feed them to much ;)

Thanks!

Now, another question... I bought frozen blueberries, thawed a few, put them in the tank....they don't float. Which means, Trevor won't eat them. He gave them a couple of tries, chomping down on them once he found them in the bottom of his tank, but wouldn't actually eat/chew/swallow.

What are the chances that with patience and perseverance if I keep giving him a few every few days..that he'll eventually eat them? Any at all?

Thanks in advance.

i didn't have any luck at all with blueberries with my turtle. she's way to picky of an eater. To get them to float you can also break them in half to make the pieces lighter to float and see if that works. Blueberries are also something that should only be given as a treat from what i understand because of the sugar in them.

I concur. From what I have learned from the almighty internet, freezing fruits or veggies barely effects their nutritional values. Looked into this when my son was born and wanted to make some of his baby food myself just to be certain he was being properly nourished. Good luck with the blueberries, put some in my tank for the first time today along with a piece of cantaloupe. No interest in either. Hopefully the crabs east some of it.
55 gallon tank with a 4.5 inch RES, 2 Sarrassa Comets, 2 Red Tetras, 1 Giant Danio, 1 Black Fin Tetra, 1 Rosey Red, 2 Golden Chinese Algae Eaters, 1 Pleco, and 4 red claw crabs... too much? Ok, I'll get a bigger tank.

Yes, food doesn't lose so much nutrition when you freeze it but more so when you cook it. How often can I feed the girls blueberries? I have a HUGE blueberry bush and I literally have an unlimited supply haha
