Hello everyone,

I got 3 question, I think this is the right place to post it.
My turtle are 4 1/2 inches and 2 inches

I bought a Eheim Pro 2228 for my 29 gallon tank. I wonder is it too powerful for my 29 gallon tank?

Second Question is that I am try to set up a reverse undergraveling filter with the eheim pro 2228. What kind of media should I use inside the canister filter? I heard that the RUGF is acting like a bio filter so should I only put mech media in the canister?

Third question is, I am going to use stone that are size of a quarter for graveling is that ok with the RUGF?

The filter is quite strong, ive had used an xp3 in an 30 gallons and i had to reduce the flow a lot because it was hard for the turtles to correctly swim.

For my media i personally use seachem matrix and purigen(as carbon replacement) and i never had any problem and i believe the price is just right for the quality of there products.

As for an undergravel filter ,i think its an bad idea, first because your filter is strong enough to take the bioload of an 160gallons,and the stone you plan to use wont have enough surface for bacteria and it would make the system useless.

What i would suggest is to setup your eheim like it should be,aim the output to the wall of the tank to reduce the flow and use the substrate of your taste.

Thank for helping

I understand that the rock I use wont have enough surface for bacteria.

so for my Eheim filter there is 3 basket for filter media, so I was thinking about the bottom 2 I will use Mech filter Media, and for the top one I will use a Bio Media. Or i can put the Bio media in the middle.

i built what you want to build in a 65 gallon tank with a rena xp3. the results are ok so far, deff better than if i didnt have it but would work better with a more powerful pump. id say if u go through with your idea depending on how you build your jets you wont havw to adjust the flow rate on the filter
65 Gallon
-1 RES (Myrtle)
-1 Pleco (unnamed)
-1 four lined pimelodus catfish (unnamed)
-1 shubunkin (unnamed)
29 Gallon Planted Tank
-3 cory cats
-# guppies!

I don't think anyone has tried using a RUGF with RES on this forum. Even the UGF are a somewhat rare choice.

Ah ic, does that mean RUGF and UGF are not that good?

well i know that UGF will get lot of stuff stuck under the Graveling. But i will be using a Big pebble stone so i don't think it will get stuck that easy. And if i do RUGF then nothing should be stuck under there, And like Sull324 say the filter is too powerful for 29 gallon tank so it should be no problem.

It mainly means there is a lack of experience with those filters. Since RES produce larger amounts of solid waste, it might be more difficult for maintenance. That's why a lot of us go for canisters rated a few times greater than the tanks they're used in.

Just-44 In most cases I would suggest that you look up the gph of your filter. You should pump at least 5 times the volume you have in the tank. It sounds like you will be ok. Also your tank is too small for the turtles you have. You will need a 70gallon to just to catch up.
