Feeding and Nutrition :: Rosy reds

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

There is a chance of them getting parasites from eating live prey, just because it hasnt happened to you doesnt mean that it cant..if I were to feed live prey I'd atleast breed my own (the animals I am getting in the near future require live food so I am going to breed my own). It doesnt matter if the place is disgusting or not, if their is a large number of fish in a tank, then there could be disease lurking around there..I have never seen feeder fish in a nice big tank with all the proper trimmings. The one's I see are all kept in a huge tank full of feces and a fish head stuck onto the filter intake. Is a pet store realy going to take extra care of 12 cent fish like they do with the more expensive ones? No

Most RES pretty much eat anything, even if it's dead..so why go through the trouble, and risk of using live feeders? If your turtle doesnt eat dead prey, then using live ones is okay as long as you breed them or get them from a reputable source. But mine eat them dead...and I bet a lot of others would too.

Live prey should be for animals that are picky eaters or absolutely require it. Sure a fish maybe just a fish, but is it fair to end it's life in such a horrific way just to satisfy your own need? You know..you can even buy already dead, freeze dried crickets and worms that are even gutloaded, for a couple of bucks at any pet store..most turtles will take right to it too. But if you wish to use feeder fish then that is okay, but there are better prey items out there anyway.

Every two weeks or so is fine. Once he starts getting older you can start feeding that stuff once a month. But right now he is a baby and needs that little extra protein here and there. Just dont overdo it.

You can alternate between the two if you like.

depends how big the rosey red is. If it's pretty big then I'd say one, if it is pretty small, then two might be good.

And like marisa said, switch it around, a feeder fish or two every two weeks and then the next two weeks a cricket, worm, snail or something else etc. It is important to vary the diet. Not only with prey but with vegetables and plants too. If it will save you trouble you can purchase already killed freeze dried worms, crickets, blood worms, and snails too at almost any pet store for a couple of bucks, most of them even come gutloaded (fed before killed so more nutritious).

But doesn't freezing them lower all of the nutrients? So my question I guess is why feed them to the turtle at all? They'll be ok without the fish

I like to switch Tito protien intake diet
I give him crickets one month, then rosy reds the other.
This way his desire for the food increases

Brooksie never ate her veggies either but now that she's older (she's 4) she seems to eat them just fine. When she was younger though forget it!
