You can raise a captive turtle without pellets, but it's harder to keep the diet balanced and is more time consuming. I had a recent conversation with a vet who felt that keepers tended to depend too much on pellets, although she admitted pellets were more convenient. A blend of pellets and other more "natural" foods is good.
