Feeding and Nutrition :: Spinach Information Needed

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Don't cite the crusades and make me sound like the Roman Catholic Church. I too enjoy science, and the scientific method. In fact, as an animal science major, that's what I do, all day, everyday.
This site is full of two things: opinions and facts. If you want to check the factual basis of opinions, be my guest. I just found it random that you pull the topic of spinach in diets out of nowhere, insist that the fact is wrong-- find out it's right, and yet, you're the enlightened one? I don't need to cite my sources, no one here does, we all simply share our experiences and what's worked for us. If you want scientific evidence go ahead and do a literature search, but it's insulting to others to imply that they are ignorant simply because they haven't backed up their thoughts as you would like them to. This isn't a scientific symposium, it's a turtle chat.

And yes, that gravel must go. Although, I do enjoy the rest of the set-up, it;s very modern.

Tertule, I think your posts may have come off a bit harsh. :o I understand the excitement in posing an academic challenge. But, as is always the case with the internet, wording is everything. :) Excitement can easily be misread as an accusation, criticism, or even a threat.

Meg, I don't think Tertule was trying to insult anyone or be offensive. He did apologize for his excitement over the matter. I think that's all it was, excitement, not belligerence. :)

(BTW, smiley's :D are a wonderful way of making sure what you write does not get taken the wrong way. ;) )

I apologize for any confusion about my intentions. I didn't mean anything personal. It gets very frustrating looking for information on proper care for reptiles and finding varying information based on personal experience or by untested hyposthesis. Every turtle has its own personality, differing moods, and loveable quirky things they do in the tank. But there has to be concrete evidence out there to help everyone out there on the crusade (used in a positive connotation :-) ) to save every turtle in the world.

Personally, I appreciated this thread. :D There are a lot of old proven methods and do's and don'ts that have become "that's just the way it is". After a while the original reasons for a certain practice are no longer discussed by the old-timers because it's been covered over and over again. But then newbies like us come around, we learn what to do and what not to do. Most things make sense, but some things (like spinach) aren't as clear so we speculate, "oh it must be the calcium/phosphate ratio" (that's what I always thought). Discussions like this motivate us dig deeper for the facts. It also moves the old-timers to expound on the reasons once again (sometimes to their frustration). It's all good though, IMO. :D No worries! :D

All good IMO too! People asking questions and asking questions is what moves us forward. :D

"I would appreciate if any other posts on the topic are not based on the other rubbish divulged on this site "

Didn't mean to get personal? If you don't like this site, and all we have is insignificant rubbish for you, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. That statement is not only rude and inappropriate, but absurd... if you wanted answers on your spinach, you could have found them yourself without insulting every else.

Yea, I just kind of glossed over that rant. We all say very stupid things sometimes (and yes, Tertule, that was a pretty stupid thing to say). Anyway...live and learn...

Hmm, I think a big problem here is that too many people neglect to read the excellent information that is provided on the parent web site. I think many just come straight to this forum not even realizing the wealth of information they are missing.

Tertule, did you read the section on Nutrition?...http://redearslider.com/plants.html It specifically mentions "large concentrations of oxalic" before listing the plants to avoid including spinach. There's no scientific info presented (and that's really not what that page is intended for), but at least it is mentioned. :)
