Feeding and Nutrition :: My turt still won't eat veggies!

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Post Posted: Sun Mar 04, 2007 10:22 pm   My turt still won't eat veggies!

I posted a message a while back claiming that my turtle wouldn't eat veggies, I went ahead and tried what the enticing page suggested to do and he still won't eat anything but commercial sticks, cuttlebone, and feeder fish.
I tried marinating carrots, romain lettuce, and collard greens in tuna water.
He doesn't even seem to notice the collard greens and lettuce floating at the top.
He nibbled a little bit on a carrot piece, but never ate the piece all the way, and just ignores the rest of the pieces.
Does anyone have anymore suggestions for me?
I really would like him to eat healthy, but he was only raised on sticks and feeder fish by my friend.
Please help!
Thanks.

Why don't you put a water plant iin the tank. Something like anacharis. It will live and flourish in the tank until your turtle decides to start eating it and in the meantime will improve the quality of the water.

The first vegetable my turtle ate was basil. He wouldn't touch lettuce or carrots or anything else for a long time, until he grew up. Now he eats greens every day and loves it. Sometimes they just have to grow up to appreciate their salad.

Anacharis is a great suggestion! I whole-heartedly agree with spotsmama. :)

Totally. Alpnose never ate his veggies until i bought him some anarcharis. he loved them. Riped them to bits and ate them. Now he eats his veggies like crazy. So partly it just takes time.

Silencer,

Have you tried submerging the lettuce/collard greens? I use a clip and hang it down into the water, then clip the veggies to it so they're under the water. Crush didn't start eating veggies until I did that. I guess he didn't like them floating around.

my turtle wouldn't eat veggies until I only fed her veggies for a week and no pellets or feeder fish(because that's all she was eating at one point).

It took her a whole of three days without pellets to start eating her veggies

You can also try leaving a few small tender romaine lettuce leaves floating in the tank during the day. Boredom can compel the turtle to try almost anything, including eating stuff they normally wouldn't! :)

The way I see it, they will eat their own poop, and lettuce would be MUCH tastier than turtle poop! LOL!
