I've raised my RES, Snowball, from when she was an illegal hatchling sold on Canal Street in Chinatown.

She's about 6 inches long. She's happy in her 20 gallon long tank with her basking ledge and her turle stix (with some freeze-dried shrimp thrown in for fun once in awhile). She's never had an interest in veggies.

Sadly, I can't keep my new kitten away from her tank. Fearing the heat lamp fire hazards ahead, it's time to part ways with Snowball.

We live in Rockland County, NY close to Rt 287 and the Garden State Parkway and I'll be flexible with pickup options.

While I'm asking for an adoption fee in more public postings (to keep away hoarders and whatnot), in this community I'd be happy to skip it - knowing how committed you guys are to your repitilian friends.

I'd be thrilled to have her adopted by to a turtletalker.

If you do change your mind and decide to keep her, a 20 gallon tank is not big enough.. She needs 10 gallons per inch of her shell... 60 gallons at least.

Is there any way you could relocate Snowball into a room you can close off to the kitten? Maybe some kind of 'fencing' you could put around the top of the tank to keep the kitten off? Or put the tank on a high stand that the kitten couldn't jump on to?
Just hate to see you have to part with Snowball because of a new pesty pet... Don't get me wrong, I adore cats, I have 3. It just made me think of a family member that had an indoor cat for 2 years, got a young dog from the pound and kicked the cat outside because the dog wouldn't leave the cat alone. Seems unfair and sad...

Thanks for your notes. I decided to give her to my local reptile friendly, locally-owned pet store. I researched them online and checked with my vet - their reputation is very positive. (Fred's Pets in Spring Valley, NY for anybody interested).

They are going to take care of her through the winter and find her a good home in the spring. She seemed right at home in their huge tank with other turtles so she'll be well cared for and get a chance to socialize.

The staff was very supportive and kind - they were impressed with what good shape she was in.

I openly admit that this was not the best option and that I did not fully live up to my responsibility. But I also feel satisfied that I gave her a much better start than she might have had otherwise and that she was going to be well taken care of.

Just a last note - this site was so helpful to me when I first adopted her. The information and community here helped me get up to speed quickly. Thank you!

I'm sorry you had to give him up. At least until spring you can go and visit him!
