General Care Discussion :: Sam and Nelly's Vet Visit

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Mon Jul 10, 2006 11:31 am   Sam and Nelly's Vet Visit

Finally Sam and Nelly have got a scheduled vet appointment today at 2:30. I'll let you know how it goes and if I find out what's wrong with Nelly's shell. I put him in a basket with the UVB light over him today, so hopefully it'll help clear things up since he doesn't bask really on his own yet. :(
Wish me luck!

What do you mean by putting him in a basket with UVB? Are you basically forcing him to bask under the UVB light?

No he has space around it but he wasn't getting enough rays because he didn't bask at all in the tank. My friend whos owned her turtle for a while said it would help him.

Anyway, the vet said they look great, and she tested their feces and said it didn't have any traces of harmful parasites. She didn't know excactly what was going on with Nelly's shell but she said it wasn't shedding and it wasn't fungal. She said it looked like he was burned from the heater or something and that it would clear up with shedding. I'm not using the heater anymore though because it's not working in their larger tank. I'm going to find a new one and get some thermometers while I'm at it.

There shouldn't be any reason that your turt wouldn't bask in the tank. Have you tried since you got your new set up? Assuming that all water and basking temps are correct, then your turt should be happy to bask when he pleases. Does the other one bask on her own?

Great that they got a clean bill of health, especially after the previous living conditions!

Yeah he does on his own now after I put him under the light for a bit. When no one is around he'll crawl up on the dock to bask with Sam beside him. He'll let me watch if I'm quiet and don't move around. He basks for hours and hours now and he sometimes falls asleep for a few minutes. But when they see me moving they dart back into the water! LOL
