If you only got four babies from the pregnant one, then it must not have been too mature. Just wait until one has been around for awhile. I had one pop the other day and I can't count them all. There are at least 30-50. Let's just say, I'm glad I'm not a guppy

How old do they have to be to be feed guppies?

Also, wouldn't the newborn guppies get suck into the filter?

you can give them to them at any age, they may not be interested in them though or unable to catch them, those fish are FAST!!!! Yes, the newborns may get stuck in the filter.

Well theres two fullgrown guppies that have been swimming around for a week and still 4 babies. Either Josh doesn't want to eat them or the fish know how to hide. I hope he does something about it.

I got my turt guppies for the first time yesterday. I ended up getting 5 for the price of 3 ;) (39 cents each here, and only one store carries them!) I put two in, and he didn't even notice them for the first half hour (he was too busy eating lettuce ) Then when he finally saw them, he would chase one into the corner, then it would swim down and he would follow it, then it would zoom up and he'd still be looking around the bottom of the tank for it  within a couple hours though, he figured out if he hearded them upwards into a corner, they would have no where to go. He finished off the bite sized morsels pretty quick. I put the other 3 in a fish bowl with my recooperating plants. Maybe they'll breed and I won't have to buy them again xD

(edit) Ooooh, I just looked at them, and one of them looks pretty fat! I'll hold off on feeding them to him ;) How long does it take a guppie to mature, does anyone know?

I'm not sure what the difference is between guppies and minnows, but this guy at the specialty fish and reptile store I go to said minnows were better for the turtles. I think he said something about guppies having a lot of fat.

I bought a half dozen minnows (but actually got 7) for somewhere around $1.50. When I put them in Tilly ignored them, but after I held one up to her and fed it to her...they were all gone in 2 days. :o I have since put a Zebra Danio from my fish tank in with her. He was a bully fish and was becoming increasingly aggressive, sooo I sent him to live with Tilly. I didn't think he would last, especially after the minnows went so quickly, but either Tilly enjoys his company or she just can't catch him!
1 RES - Tilly (8 inches)
3 dogs - Maggie, Rosie & Cassie
2 cats - Max & Boo
2 parakeets - Chi Chi & Rocky
several fish & aquatic frogs
Oh, and I have 3 great kids and 1 fantastic husband!

It's goldfish that are fatty. The guppies are fine in moderation, but high in protein.

I'm not sure of actual gestation period for guppies, but believe me, it won't take long, not more than a couple of weeks... especially if the guppy is already pretty fat. The first batch I got, were mostly immature and they were all eaten before they had a chance to reproduce. They keep their population going now though...and I started with a couple dozen.

Minnows and guppies are both preferable to goldfish.

Any suggestions as to what to feed guippies? I've got them in a seperate fishbowl, because Ralph will eat ANYTHING that I put in his tank, and they wouldn't last long. So they don't get all Ralph's leftover food etc. They've got a bunch of plants, but I don't know if that's enough. I use turtle water for the plants, so there's some crud in there :P I fed them some crushed up turtle pellets, which they ate, but they looked bloated after that :P

I feed just plain old flake food. I feed the ones in my turtle tank too, because I feel bad if I don't. I have to break it up small though because the turtle like to try and eat it too.

Mine came from walmart. The yellow bottle with the brown lid. TetraMin tropical flakes. I started buying the small container, but since I breed them it's more cost effective to buy the large container.

I was thinking of breeding, but it seems like a lot of work for food xD
