General Care Discussion :: Bored, stressed, or neither?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I'm not sure if the dry docking is necessary, maybe worthwhile if he gets some UVB. How is his behavior when you're doing this? Basks, hides or tries to escape?

That one or two hour difference in day light with seasons changing or 1*-2* difference in temp's may not mean a lot to us . Some of our little friends are more sensitive to it and respond in there way. No matter how well we think our habitat's are set , not all turtles are exactly the same , some just don't follow that book. All we can do is observe well and adjust to our little guy's needs. After five decades in hobby I am still learning. Looking at it more from a turtles point of view may help // guess we need to add psychology to our field of turtle keeping...8)

He tries to escape, then basks. It seems worth trying for a bit because I'm worried he's not getting enough UV light... and he did seem to bask more on his own afterwards yesterday.

Well, I made the changes. It seems like dry docking gave him the cue he needed? I only dry docked for ~30 mins on Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon. Then I was out of town Tues-Wed. Housemate says he basked a lot the past couple days and he's backing right now (Thurs) :)

Still going well. I paid the vet 33 bucks to look at my turtle's poop just in case... no parasites either :-P

Bet you feel much better and Sedge too !

The hidden question is still "why" all this started !

To me turtles as they get older they feel thing's differently. You know how I am so give me little break please I'm old. With several other post on this subject I made a change and Piggley is basking a little longer. Yes he has very large basking area with wide range of temps BUT this winter he normally goes in one area with the temp there at 89*. Instead of keep changing from 25 , 50 ,75* supplemental heat bulbs for the winter I got a dimmer. It allows me to fine tune one degree at a time for the best temp Piggley's looking for. https://www.lightingdirect.com/lutron-t ... r/p1856851
I just like having more control over the temps ! I keep the 75 watt in fixture if I would ever need to go that high and tone it down with dimmer to what Piggley likes best at the time. Who knows may modernize and go thermostat control on the basking area ?
You know Piggley an me , we are a perfect match in our quirky ways , and are happy together !
