That's pretty weird. Have you tried testing the water straight out of the tap?

Yes it's got 1 ppm ammonia :/

Well, if you see that the ammonia levels do fall back down to 0, you could try seeing if the lava rock takes off with more bacteria, or you might even want to add a second sponge filter. Sounds like there just isn't enough bio media.

Yeah, maybe I shouldn't be using the Sponge Filter mini which is supposed to be good for up to 10 gallons.

Might want to try either making one on your own (that can filter 20 gallons) or get another mini.
