General Care Discussion :: Sheldon isn't eating....

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Fri May 26, 2017 4:44 pm   Sheldon isn't eating....

Sheldon isn't eating. The water temperature is fine and she's basking and swimming and pooping, so I'm not sure what it could be.

The weather and my schedule have been all over the place lately so could that be part of it? I've ordered different food to see if she's sick of the other stuff she was eating. Thoughts? Do I need to talk to the vet?

Sheldon always seems to be finicky. How long has it been? If there is poop, she must be eating something. Anyone sneaking food to her?

Isn't she though? No one has been to my place except me lately. Though there was a window crew in here about 10 days ago. She got a large bee inside her tank which I killed. She doesn't seem to have any wounds though and the bugger looked to still have it's stinger. *shrugs* It's only been since Wednesday since I saw her eat.

Hopefully only a stage. Had two turtles once in there twenty's would not eat anything yellow or orange ??? My Minnie few years back was another story. After a week I opened her mouth had an abscess on tongue. Herp Vet drained it along with antibiotics she was back to normal in about nine days , got lucky ! My doctor friend at the Nature Center said could of been a horn from a shrimp. Ever since I remove the shrimps head with that pointy horn and smash the point at the tail. Yes over kill but all my turtles over 50 years love shrimp as a treat. Did not want to deal with that problem ever again. Once was enough !

What kind of foods have you tried? Live prey and chicken are my fallbacks (as you probably know).

She's ignoring pellets and lettuce. I'm tempted to try a shrimp ball but she's not really showing interest in food so I'm not sure if it would work. Live prey doesn't work - she just plays with her food. I could try tuna or the shrimp ball.

Know you have been doing this a good while but how about any of Sheldon's favorite fruits. Tried any treats just to get something in.
My Mickey use to be fussy in very early spring but he could never turn down cantaloupe.

Sheldon is incredibly picky. I will try the shrimp ball in the morning. She doesn't like fruit or carrots - basically only pellets and lettuce.

Semi-success! Sheldon ate 3/4 of a shrimp ball this morning! Obviously she's still a little off but at least she ate. The question is, do I call the vet tomorrow or see about holding off until Wednesday when the next feeding day arrives?

Was she due for a checkup? You can always get advice that will apply to the situation if it does not change. To me, a temporary lack of appetite without the presence of other symptoms doesn't usually ring alarm bells. What's the normal feeding schedule for her and are you sticking to it?

She's probably due for a checkup. We haven't been in since last year. I'm sticking to her usual feeding schedule though. New pellets are arriving in a few days and I'll see if perhaps a change up is in order first.

So she's fed 3x a week? I would try again sooner, but a small amount to gauge her interest.

I'll try tomorrow with a couple of pellets to see if she's in the mood. I appreciate the assist as always. :)

No interest in food this morning. She's just hanging out on her basking platform ramp. :(
