Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

At this rate maybe Penelope and Ms. MileMarker will both lay eggs by Christmas :)

Penelope hasn't returned to her old nesting areas yet. Today she went to the hole she dug yesterday and then snubbed her little turtle nose at it. She spent an hour walking the entire perimeter of the yard only to start digging about 10 feet from where she started. Three hours later she abandoned test site #2.

I have never seen her as crazy as she has been this this time. She is ballistic from 530 am until well into the afternoon. She learned to stand on her basking platform and stretch until she reached the tippy top of the enclosure - that is 14-15 inches! One morning I found her toe-up, so I have to remove access to her basking area at night.

This morning she quieted down for 15-20 minutes and I was glad she was taking a rest. It turns out that she was just busy trying to escape. Somehow she knocked the platform off her basking area, used the filter intake as leverage to pull herself onto the frame, and was trying to reach the top of the enclosure. That kind of determination earned a trip outside :)

She has been gravid for weeks but only started digging yesterday. Up until then she just was just roaming the yard like a little garden party. She isn't showing any signs of distress so I am just going with the flow. I am glad tomorrow is Saturday. I think I will just grab my coffee and set up camp in the back yard. Penelope can roam all day and when the urge strikes she won't have to wait for a ride outside. Maybe she will lay those eggs. Hey - I can dream.

That's crazy. Their ability to escape is always impressive. Penelope is lucky to have a patient mom!
