No! You wouldn't Steve. That's just plain Nasty. And Lazy.. Mine are real dirty after 2 weeks with 4 turtles as 3 goldfish. As far as that goes I can not imagine going months without a cleaning. At very least to switch out carbon and rinse sponges. Just my 2.
1 Male Mississippi Map/Mississippi
1 Female RES/Slidy.
1 DBT White Concentric Female/ Lucky
1 DBT Male/ Spots
(Housed in the same tank)

300 gallon indoor stock tank, FX6 & FX5 filters. Mega-Ray 100w UVB bulb.

I agree but I have to wonder what happened. When in use, the coarse sponges deteriorate over time, so I can't imagine them being good for water quality either.

I would think at that point they would be so full of waste that they would not be doing their job at all.
