I read that my baby redeared slider likes to have hiding places available, like caves or thick vegetation. So I put a large white coffee mug lying on its side in the bottom of the tank and thought that would be a perfect hideyhole, but after several days my turtle has still not gone near it! Why?

It's good to have but there is never any guarantee they will use it. They still need some privacy and time to adjust.
