General Care Discussion :: Possible fungus?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Thu May 26, 2016 9:06 pm   Possible fungus?

I was feeding my turtles, and I noticed an odd brownish spot on the neck of one of my sliders. It almost looks like shed, except for the color and the fact that it's circular. I'm planning on taking him to the vet tomorrow or the day after, unless this is something simple I can treat from home.

Skimming through the health section of Basic Care, it looks like it might be a fungus.

How big is your turtle? 5-6 inches on the shell
How long have you had it? 3 years (age not really known)

What is the water temperature? Thermometer set to 80° Fahrenheit
Did you use a thermometer? No
Are you using a water heater? Yes
How much water is in there? About 80 gallons
Are you using a water conditioner? Yes, ZooMed Reptisafe
Are you using any filtration? Fluval FX6

What is the basking temperature? 90ish degrees. I can't find my laser thermometer.
Is there a basking light? Yes
Is there a basking platform that is easy to climb on? Yes
What kind is it or what is it made out of? Hard foam. The turtle basking ramp from PerSmart. Also, a secondary dry spot away from the basking light, a climbable faux-rock internal filter, without the filtering part.
Is there a UVB light? Yes. I don't recall the brand. Either ZooMed compact or All Living Things compact.

What have you been trying to feed it? ZooMed turtle pellets and collard greens
When was the last time your turtle ate? While I'm typing this.

How big is the tank/pond/enclosure? 100 gallons
Is the tank near a window? Sort of, but the window is blocked
Is the tank in a room with a lot of activity? Medium activity. In the same room with my other animals.

Have you read the Basic Care section? On and off. Skimmed the health section, and seems like a fungus.
Have you searched the forums for similar situations? No

Is there any other unusual activity/symptoms? Nope

Also present in the tank are another RES and a Painted Turtle
Sorry about the quality. He doesn't like to hold still.

I think those are bite wounds, and they've been fighting. You will have to separate them to prevent further injuries.

FYI, the top photo isn't two turtles. It's the same one, the back wall of the tank just reflects like that.

Ah, that makes more sense. It's usually one aggressor (a male), separation is still highly recommended.

Back from the vet, and she said it's a fungal infection. I have medicine for it, but I was wondering about cleaning the tank. I completely drained it, and cleaned the filter, and let all the ornaments dry completely. I was wondering, though, if I could put Pimafix or something similar in the water to keep the fungus from sticking around in the waterwhile I'm treating the turtle. Any suggestions/objections?

I still think it's from a bite. Those who do disinfect used a weak solution of bleach... 2 oz to a gallon of water. I would probably just clean it out, air dry it for a week and replace all the filter media.
