Everything you mentioned besides this indicates that they are ok. The not submerging part of Wilson's behavior may be a lazy habit for him or something else but there is no signs of internal medical issues that I see indicating in your text so far. Tim, how long is Wilson now as you said that he did not grow so much? Other questions is do you have a UVA and UVB with a basking area? I noticed that you stated that he was cold as ice with no heater prior to you getting him, normally this could result to a respiratory infection but you would of had further signs of this months ago and since then he is normal with the heater, so I think you are good there. You received them at the right time to help. How deep is the water as well? The overall diet needs to be adjusted in the amount being offered instead of continuous and the part of the extra shell sounds like extra scutes.
I do not think the need to see a vet is mandatory at this time however based on the questions that I asked on Wilson Size , the lights and just general information of the tank accessories as well as the amount being fed can help tremendously and also I personally welcome you to the forums, thanks Tim.
Photos like Red stated can be helpful for sure as well.
