Habitat - Indoor :: XP4 Filter Media Setup / Behavior

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Steve, Veipa--

Do you remember the configuration that I am currently using? Honestly I think it was Claw at Turtle Times that recommended it.

I have always gone the bio filter method and never really used carbon in any of my tanks... fish or turtle.

If the water is all of a sudden not going through the sponges something in your filter might be blocked. I would look up your filter configuration but I'm busy tonight.Sorry.

For your filter the filter pads should be in the bottom.

Steve - Do you recommend that I try the other variation and see how the pads look after that, or stick with the filter full of floss instead? The tank is staying fairly clean, it's just strange to me that this behavior has changed.

It depends... if you want to try to figure it out, then go with the floss. If not, try Veipa''s set up. I have an XP3 but don't have as much bio media as he calls for.

I use carbon and purigen. Why don't you like or use carbon? I still say something is wrong with your filter if this just started out of the blue.

I think the turtle times thread said not to use it. tbirdie, Carbon is the better way to remove chlorine and impurities. Yes, it can bother sensitive fish but it RES are much tougher. Many household filter systems and fridges use carbon for filtration now.

Hey guys. I'm knee deep in trouble shooting this now that things have calmed down. Been on the phone with api and trying all sorts of things. I've cleaned this filter out in places I didn't even know existed lol. My final question is: is there any right or wrong way to stack and fit together these baskets? This time I'm noticing a gap between the top basket and the top, and I'm wondering if that's problematic? Pic attached

I changed to your config of media, though api told me to put it back the way I had it. What a mess. Just work, filter!

The baskets should fit tightly together. Is there somethink from keeping it from going down? The order in which your media is in place will have little to do with performance. Maybe over a long period but not short term. I set my filter up like hagen recommends not the way the filter media thread recommends and it works fine.

Well, I just posted elsewhere, but the canister just cracked open and flooded out. Again. So I am looking for a good filter that will still fit under my tank, if at all possible. The XP-4 (XL) has just a little wiggle room with the cords, so it couldn't be much longer than that, I think. Any thoughts for a 75G? I don't have any filtration right now, so I'm on the clock.
