General Care Discussion :: 2 new turtles and...

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

So, my mother decided to accept 2 new turtle :( in our 65 gallon tank. Well, at least they are kind of small, good and bad, good cause they might not take a lot of space in the tank, and bad because Kame might bully them. They at the moment are getting along. So now, what i ask is something else, they came with floating basking area, and its plastic. Kame likes to bite it, and she successfully manages to bite pieces off the plastic. Will this cause any problems, she eats tiny pieces of the plastic. How can i make her stop?

I will upload some pics later of the new turtles, both red ear sliders, about 4-5 inches. They seem pale in skin, one likes to move a lot, the other kind of moves fast, but is calmer. If you see some problems in the shell, please tell me some solutions.

One last thing, what should i feed them, both the small and Kame, and how often, like every 3 days? And how much a day? My sister feeds kame lettuce every day.

Update: I think i might try to convice my mom to return them, because I just saw Kame bite 3 times one of the small turtles, in the leg. I checked her and nothing seems wrong at the moment, but i will seperate them, they have their own small thank, but no filter, no heater, and its very small.

These are all Sombrerito

The webpages show what I'm planning to buy for them, i know the heater looks cheap, but currently im the only one willing to "waste" money on these turtles, and i dont have a lot of it. Please tell me if this is alright, the clamp lamp, the uvb, and if possible ignore the heater.

Nice looking turtles but what sizes are they? Why did you mom take more in? I applaud your efforts in their care.

You can save a few bucks on the clamp lamp and get it from home depot. I know you said ignore the heater, but do be real careful. Even reputable brands have problems, and a few years ago some even exploded (and destroyed many tanks).

Thanks Steve, at the moment I don't know his big they are, haven't had time to measure them, but my estimate is 4-5 inches. My mom took them in from someone who couldn't take care of them either. At first I was against she taking them in, because I though they were bigger, turns out they're smaller.I'm against it now, because Kame likes to bit everything, be it food, plastic, rocks, anything, as if she is hungry. I don't think its territorial, she just seems to want to eat all the time, biting anything.

I really like the color on their shell!

I recently found my 3in taking bites at the air, the bubbles excite her. (Don't know if her or him, but I call them all "her")

It might not be territorial but a lot of RES have aggressive personalities... that's partly why many countries consider them to be invasive pests.

Yeah, she is kind of aggressive, trying to eat anything. Just finished measuring all of them, Kame, our original turt is 7 5/8 inches, she actually kind of grew, use to be 7.2 inches. The small one r actually 3 7/8 inches, both are the same.
