Hi there!

I've recently adopted a pair of RES from a kid that was moving away to college. They are about 11 years old, and 5 1/2 and 6 inches shell length. They came with a 20 gallon tank, a floating turtle log, and a Fluval underwater filter.
I've moved them out of the 20 gallon tank except for feeding times. They now live in an 8 ft kiddie pool in the walkout basement in front of the sliding glass doors. When the sky stops pouring water down, I have a 3 or 4 ft hard plastic baby pool for them to lounge outside in. I've built sloped platforms with bricks and pavers to form basking areas, and added water heaters and two more Whisper filters (specs forthcoming). I've owned several reptiles before, and also briefly a fish aquarium, but these are my first turtles! After spending a few weeks going back and forth on the internet looking up information, this website has stuck with me as the best place to receive feedback from a niche community.

Turtles the first day they arrived in their tiny tank, with log.

Pool most of the way set up, this picture is good for showing the back door and the amount of early morning sunlight they can get in a good day.

The pool as it is today, cloudy and rainy outside.

Welcome to the site! The pool setup looks great. There has been no aggression between the RES?

Not that I've observed. They don't have any blemishes, and they've apparently grown up together for a decade. I haven't turned them over to peek at their tails to sex them, so I'm not sure on that front.

Looks like a male and a female, though some close-up pics would help.

Hoping for a tail shot, but both appear to be females if they are 11 years old. How certain are you about that age?

Not really certain. The information was given to me from the previous owners.

EDIT: They won't uncurl their tails for me, lol.

Have you considered a stock tank? Like myself you have the room for a 300 gallon one!

I have not seen stock tanks around locally. I was planning on visiting a pond supply store once I have a few hundred dollars in disposable income, but it's far away and will be a special trip. As the water level is right now, they should be in 283-315 gallons of water, and I'm looking around for a pond filter or two to output the 3,398-3,775 gph that volume will need....

I hear ya. You don't really that much volume in water flow as long as your doing water changes to keep nitrates down. Nice set up ! Your pair should be happy.

Not to mention 4000 gph would be like having your turtles in the Colorado river right after heavy rain. I run one Fx6 in my tank. I think its 494 gph.

I'm going to order a water testing kit for aquariums tonight, I've got the protein film on top of the water and its starting to cloud up a little :( my husband had found some pool filters that he thinks might work instead of pond filters.

Kansasslider, how many gallons of water do your turtles have for that? I want some circular current going on, but I know I don't want a Colorado river.

Probably around 250 gallons give or take. The slick or oil if you will your seeing is easly controlled. Water movement on the surface is how to control it. Point your filter outflow at the surface of the water. I use my filters outflow and a maxi jet circulation pump in my tank to keep the water moving. Uncirculated water will become stagnant and smell horrible.please forgive my new phones spell check I'm not trying to correct it just letting it learn. Thanks.

I've found a couple pool filter ads for sale, both are Intex.
There are two of these http://www.amazon.com/Intex-Krystal-Fil ... 00YDTJL4K/
And one of these http://www.amazon.com/Intex-Easy-Gallon ... B000OCSNJY
Do you think either of these are enough?
