Feeding and Nutrition :: Cultivating a snail population

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Okay so I don't have a picture (I'm at work slacking off) but I bought a small 2.5 gallon tank, put some gravel in it, filled it about half way with water from Brixie's tank, and put, I think, 6 or 7 snails in it along with a few live plants. I'm hoping they start to reproduce in there. I put it by the window to help with algae growth. It's harder to count them now since there's gravel, so I'll keep everyone updated on how it goes!

They will probably outgrow that quickly. I didn't ask for my snails, and I wasn't big on feeding live prey to the turtles. So, I had to order more anacharis to feed the snails. Eventually I gave them away, but they were low maintenance.

What is everyone's thoughts on Malaysian Trumpet Snails? They are small and have more of the cone shells. I've been contemplating breeding them for live food in my turtle tank and as a clean up crew for my kids goldfish tanks. I currently have a couple in my dwarf frog tank and they seem to do a good job at cleaning. Not sure if they would be a good live food for my turtle though. Thoughts?

ljapa mentioned earlier in this thread about potential danger. A few more opinions (but generally no): viewtopic.php?f=6&t=32582&hilit=Malaysian+Trumpet

Alright, so I'm not positive, but I think I saw a new snail today (it's shell was a lot lighter than any of the first generation snails.) I did try to hand feed her a snail but she missed and the snail fell into the tank. I'm sure she ate it by now. I hand fed her another one. Even if she eats it whole, shes big enough that it would cause any kind of clog in her throat.

if you want to put snails in your turtle tank that's fine. Just keep in mind they breed like crazy. Their eggs are so small actually there microscopic and you probably won't even see them and the next thing you know you're going to have a huge colony in your filter. Trust me I know.

Its not a bad thing for your filter just know they like to breed in filters.

Okay update, either they aren't breeding or they are really, really good hiders. They look healthy in the little tank, but I can still only spot, like, four of them. They also have a habit of crawling on the surface of the water upside down. Super cool to watch.

The plants seem fine, it's getting plenty of sunlight, and the water doesn't look dirty. Any other tips for getting them to start breeding?

Just give it time. The eggs are tiny and almost clear, so you won't notice it.

Alright, well I bought a little whisper filter for a 10 gallon tank, so it's going to help clean the water. Maybe the snails will reproduce in the filter too, whatever helps. I was expecting the tank to be infested by now.

You probably don't need a filter for it.

But it can't hurt, right? The tank is still an eyesore with the nasty water.

It won't hurt, but assuming you are still using the 2.5G, it will produce a lot of water movement. Snails don't generally enjoy that, and it may slow breeding down.

Well that's a minor problem, but as long as it still actually eventually happens, I'll be happy. As it currently stands, no, they have not started breeding, and it's been a few weeks. The ones in there seems healthy aside from one that died though.

You probably don't need the gravel. Maybe a partial water change would have helped more than a filter.
