Hello,

I'm temporarily (~10 months) taking care of a friend's turtle-- however, I have no idea what kind of turtle it is. I was originally told he/she is a RES, but the lack of red ears makes me doubt that. I was thinking maybe yellow bellied slider, or maybe a texas river cooter, but I have no idea.

Anyone know what he/she might be?

I think it could still be a RES even though there is a lack of red/orange. Turtle also looks like a girl.

If the link isn't working, try removing https? like, http://imgur.com/a/kqURB

Is that common to have a RES without *any* red? Yeah, I was kinda thinking the turtle looked female, but I wasn't sure because I didn't know the species. I think the relatively short claws give it away, though.

I guess it's somewhat common, but I think it could also be a cumberland slider (Trachemys scripta troostii).

Are there any differing characteristics between the two that I could use to try to determine the exact species?

Also, if the turtle *is* a cumberland slider, is the care similar to care for a RES?

Cumberland sliders are so closely related to RES that they can interbreed and even do in the wild where the habitats overlap.

Their care is identical.

The pictures I've seen of mixing have a yellowish "ear" with hints of red to it. Cumberland sliders don't have any red at all. Of course, I'm just going from pictures online. I've only seen RES, some painted turtles and snappers in person at any length.
