Our new little guy, Blake has been sleeping a lot - today he spent over 3 hours asleep on the basking site.

His eyes are normal, he's breathing through his nose, and he's sleeping with his head up. No symptoms of illness, other than all the sleeping.

He just moved in - is it possible he's adjusting to the higher temperatures (had no heat lamp and was in 75 degree water at the pet store)?

He hasn't eaten yet either, which I believe is normal for a new baby RES coming home to a new environment.

Anyway, anybody have any insight on baby RES sleeping lots?

----------

How big is your turtle? 1 inch
How long have you had it? 3 days

What is the water temperature? 85*f
Did you use a thermometer? Yes
Are you using a water heater? Yes
How much water is in there? 10 gallons (half full tank)
Are you using a water conditioner? No
Are you using any filtration? Yes

What is the basking temperature? 94
Is there a basking light? Yes
Is there a basking platform that is easy to climb on? Yes
What kind is it or what is it made out of? A rock-shaped site that you buy (used to have a filter inside, but I hated it)
Is there a UVB light? Yes

What have you been trying to feed it? Baby pellets
When was the last time your turtle ate? Not with us, not yet

How big is the tank/pond/enclosure? 20 gallons
Is the tank near a window? No
Is the tank in a room with a lot of activity? Yes, but it has to be, all of our rooms have a lot of activity

Have you read the Basic Care section? Yes, newly memorized
Have you searched the forums for similar situations? Yes, but those turtles have symptoms of illness, he doesn't.

Is there any other unusual activity/symptoms? Just lots of sleeping

1 inch is very small....
In my opinion keep water level around 2 inch or so for the first week or 10 days. you can increase the water temp few degrees arnd 88 (depending weather at your place, if its cold not hot n humid like my place). for feeding you can try blood worms or worms from garden cleaned and cut into small pieces, baby shrimps, guppy

I m no expert... Lets see what others hv to say...

I'd concentrate on getting him to eat... where did you get him from?

He nibbled just a little bit on the chicken I gave him yesterday. I'm gonna keep trying with chicken until he's eating a little more, turtles can't resist it!

We got him from a pet store nearby in Kitchener, ON. The sale of these little guys is legal here in Canada.

Most of his brothers and sisters were sleeping in the (enclosed) tank. He was not - he was up against the glass practically begging us to take him home (or begging for food). We figured that was a good sign, we thought that was a good hunger response that he was nearly asking for food.

I wouldn't say he's sick - not yet.

We've had a sick baby turtle before and she basked and basked and basked all day - sleeping, head down, sneezing,

Of course, it's possible that he is sick with something else, but no fungus, no symptoms. Just sleeping. All the time.

I feel like this is just an adjustment, but I'm going to keep reporting back. We're pushing Day 5, and he nibbled on chicken yesterday, so at least we're heading in some direction. I feel like maybe he'll just be slow to come around.

Once they start eating, they adjust real quick... hopefully that'll happen here too.
