Greetings turtle lovers

I introduced myself a few weeks ago after having taken a RES from some pretty rotten conditions..no heat, no filter, 10 gal tank with 2" water (Speedy is 4.5"). I didn't have the money for a big tank so I have her in a large plastic tote. It actually doesn't look too bad and she seems content in it. She appears healthy, but I wanted to get more opinions on the subject, as well as a confirmation that she is indeed a she, despite the fact that I was previously told otherwise. If I screw up the pics, please excuse me....I am technologically-challenged, as well as being a lousy photographer

Speedy is a she and does look very healthy, though has she been doing some growing lately?

Yeah I love their shells as well...at least she doesn't appear to have any fungus or anything....given her prior conditions, I am shocked. Yes, Steve, I think she has been on a growth spurt...I didn't measure her until recently, but I am fairly sure that she has added at least a half-inch to her shell since I got her after Christmas. I admit to grossly overfeeding her after she started eating again...I was foolishly following the directions on the Repto-Min, which says feed as much as your pet will eat in a few minutes up to twice daily..HAH! She could eat half a can if I let her..she is a PIG! Now she gets her portion of pellets every other day, and a few pieces of shredded carrots or some nibbles of kale daily. I hope she does slack off on her growth...she has been shedding scutes regularly though and they look good. I just still can't believe that she was kept in that 10 gal tank. I am so glad I got her out of that situation....I have been guilty of being misinformed about turtle care at times, but it really annoys me that people pay so little attention to turtles because they are cheap or free, as was this case.

For a turtle who was in such horrible conditions she has an amazing shell!

You're welcome! Consider using a pill box to sort out her food. This is also useful if other people are around and like to feed her too.

Your turtle seems really health and happy, but there is fat sticking out meaning that she is fat so get her on a diet by feeding her less than usual amount and when it is warm take her out to run to lose her fat!


THEN SHE WILL BE 100 % HEALTHY!!!!

Since I have joined this forum, I have seen pictures of some fantastic setups that make mine seem woefully plain in comparison, so thanks RosesNKeeks for liking mine:) I have gotten some fabulous ideas to upgrade as I go, so I foresee a long term work-in-progress in regards to Speedy's habitat. I have been kicking myself for having given away my 55 tank and Fluval filter years ago when I released my snapping turtle--not into the wild, don't worry...into a friend's snapping turtle pond. I still go back to see if I recognize her amongst her new friends, but no luck. She was the size of a salad plate when I put her in there, and all the turtles I have seen in that pond are absolutely HUGE now!
