Habitat - Outdoor :: Raccoon fishing out of my pond.

I have a 300 gallon rubbermaid setup outside with my 5yr old res, and 5 goldfish. This morning I came outside to feed everyone and saw the remains of the biggest goldfish sitting outside the pond. The only thing that was left was some scales and the tail fin. I have concluded that a very large raccoon has been fishing out of my pond.

I was relieved to find my res in the pond untouched, but took precautions asap. I went to homedepot to get some metal fencing and put it on top of the stock tank so nothing could get in. This is only temporary though, as it looks very unattractive and prevents me from cleaning the pond.

I was wondering if anyone else had a problem like this, and what you guys did about it.

you can get a high enough acrylic / plastic sheet as the fence as it'll be too slippery for them to climb

u can stretch fishing line across the top, its what my friend does with his pond, makes it so birds cant stand on it and animals cant move their hands to fish and u cant see it, ill ask him more about it to give u a better idea

I was wondering if there is a way to make a removeable cover for the pond so I can take it off when I need to clean the pond. Basically something I can just put on at night for raccoon prevention, and take off during the day for aesthetics.

I was thinking maybe having a wire mesh with some type of frame around it so it would be too heavy for a raccoon to lift. I just don't know where I could buy these type of things or how to make them.

The only other alternative is to move my girlfriend's dogs to my yard to guard the pond.

I've seen pics on another site of covers that have been made to cover large stock tanks using hardware cloth and wooden frames. The covers were hinged so they could be lifted.

I had a deadly Raccoon attack.

After it we had to do this to our pond.



When we redid the pond this summer, we made it a lot nicer, and easier.





Ignore how ugly the pond was, it was still in construction.

The pond supply place i go to runs a small radio out to the pond and leaves it on all night. Thats how they have dealt with there raccoon problem eating the koi and other fish.
