Did the leg get stuck in the filter? Or on the heater?
Posting pictures would be helpful, I'm having trouble figuring out exactly what you're describing.
So the two turtles are being kept separately? That is good... so the uninjured one doesn't harm the injured one further.
Keep the wound clean to avoid further infection. Is the turtle still eating? If so that's wonderful keep him doing so. You're doing the right thing by finding a vet- remember to make sure it's a herp vet. Just keep him safe and clean until you can get to the vet's. I hope it all works out.

I'm having difficulty understanding what you wrote...one turtle has a damaged leg and the other is missing?

A pic of the leg would really be good---you said it was bleeding but that the bleeding stopped and that it looks burned and red and is twisted? Can the turtle move the leg? I'd clean it (do you have betadine?) and put some antibiotic ointment (like Neosporin) if the wound isn't really deep, and take him to the vet. Keep him out of the water a bit to let the Neosporin sink in a bit. Keep his tank water really clean. If you can't find a vet sooner, take him when the vet you mentioned gets back on the 3rd.

Try to find the other turtle as well. Look everywhere, even places you don't think he could possibly be. If you've got paper or clothes on the floor, be sure to check those carefully, even the pockets.

I suggested some products you could put on it above. If you use Betadine, I'd dilute it a bit with water.

Another option, as long as you're going to a store that sells Betadine, is getting an antiseptic cleaner called Hibiclens, which you could also use to clean the wound. The active ingredient in it is chlorohexidine; if you can't find the brand Hibiclens, perhaps there's something where you are that's close to it. If you do get Hibiclens, dilute it in half with water to make it 2% strength.

Can you post a pic of the leg?

Like Marisa said, after you've cleaned the wound with betadine, put some Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic salve on it.

The turtle can stay out of the water for most of the day every day for a while. Keep him in the rubbermaid tub for now, then a couple of times a day put him in some shallow water (just deep enough so that he can get his head under water) so he can eat and drink. Put some pellets in there for him to eat.

It's very important that he stay warm. If the damp towels in the rubbermaid are making it chilly, then take them out and just keep dry towels in there.

You don't want him to try to use his leg to swim or walk around. He needs to stay as quiet as possible until he can see the vet. Your job will be to prevent the wound from getting infected until he gets there.

Did you tell the vet it's an emergency? Call back and tell them you've got an emergency and can the vet see you ASAP.

What kind of filter do you have?

Hang in there. i know it must be very scarey. I know you're doing everything you can right now to help. We're all thinking of you and pulling for you.

Well, it certainly doesn't look fun, but she should be fine after seeing a vet, she's young and I'm sure resilient. I cannot tell from the picture, but it mostly looks swollen and hemorrhaged, which would be quite understandable if it were sucked in the filter. Your grandfather was lucky to find her when he did.

How does she do in the water? Can she swim? If the leg is broken I imagine having it in water is less stressful and less painful because it's her natural habitat and because she won't be putting as much pressure on it as if she were dry docked. BUT, if she is having trouble swimming and might drown then you should dry dock her.
If you do put her in water, make sure you dry dock her when you apply the Betadine to the wound so that it doesn't wash off immediately.
Putting her in shallow water isn't a good idea because it's so hard to regulate water temps with shallow water, and warmth is important to her recovery. An RI is easier to contract if her immune system is already working overtime on another injury and she's stressed.
You're doing a wonderful job caring for her until you can get to a vet, keep up the good work.

I see in the earlier post you talked to the vet... did you describe what happened and get any feedback or just get a receptionist? Will he be back to the closer clinic soon I hope?
