I am looking to upgrade to a 60 gallon tank for my red eared sliders but I am not sure what to obtain as far as filters and water heaters. Can anyone suggest a canister filter or submersible filter? Also, what are everyone's recommendations for water heaters for a 60 gallon tank.

doesnt it stay warm in Southern california? do u even need a heater?
u would need a 200watt heater (or two 100watt heaters)
i would recommend a rena xp3 filter

yeah its warm here, but everyone has the AC on. even with the tank i have now, without the heater the water hits temperatures of like 70 at night. and thats without an AC

I use a Fluval 405 on a 40 gallon tank. (actually a 75 g just over half full with 40 g in it) We have two turtle tanks - both the same. I love it. I can go months without having to clean a filter and the water stays clean.

I'd be worried you'll be a little under powered with a 305 on a 60 g tank.

Are you planning to fill the 60 gallon tank? What is the gph rating on the 305?

5 x is the usual filter recommendation, meaning that if you have 60 gallons of water. you want a filter that pumps 300 gallons per hour.

I agree Steve. When I say I only do my filters every few months - I am doing partial or even full water changes between. I test my water to, so I know what's really up with it.

i do a 10-20% weekly ^__^ i guess im just running a fluval 305 now =__= since the penguin deal didn't fall through. i still need to get a water heater before i transfer my hatchlings into the 60 gallon lol. I can't believe i got a 60 gallon for two hatchlings haha

it might look big now but they grow a lot in their first year. i moved my RES from a 29 to a 65 when she was about 2.5inches and is almost 4" now. they will grow fast

As of right now, I have a 60 gallon tank, 200 watt Marine land steath heater, Fluval 305 canister filter and all the works for lighting heating and basking ^__^ There is also three thermometers in the tank one being the marina aqua minder which is next to my bed so it wakes me up if anything goes wrong, the thermometer in the middle of my tank is a floating one that i use as my controller, and one more thermometer on the opposite side just for kicks. I also have a 4th thermometer for the basking area lol. Now I just need to figure out how to set up my heating lamp since theres no where to hang it off of. Any tips?

They have stands to hold clamp dome lamps, and people have even hung them from their ceilings. If you have lamps that have clips, you can use them on shelves or on sides of the tank (depending on your setup).
