I need advice, and quick. The T Rex 100 bulb was recalled and Carolina Pet Supply won't have them available for several weeks (and that's their estimate, not knowing what T Rex says ...).

They have the 160's in stock, is there a reason I can't use that? I think I have about 24" to play with, will the 160W just be more powerful and make the area hotter, or will it have too much UVB?

Thanks!

My opinion here, but i would say it's just hotter and covers a larger radius because you place it farther.Use a thermometer and adjust.
I can't think of any reason why it would have more UVB.

No no no and no. It does produce more uvb at a longer range,t-rex and megaray are the exact same bulb and they do explain on the site that the 160w need to be farther away. Putting it closer would put your turtles at risk.

To really answer your question, yes it is hotter,it might be able to produce enough heat at the safe range.

And please, when its about health issues dont post anything until you are sure of yourself ,you could really hurt someone else turtles with your opinions.

sull324 - Really? You are complaining about me asking a question? I have almost 4000 posts, I'm not a newbie. I've never dealt with MVBs which is why I was asking a question, I certainly did not imply in my post that anyone else should do what I'm doing.

I have given 2.5 years of good advice, so please, help answer my question but don't cause drama.

Just follow the directions. The 160w will just need to be farther away than the 100w because it does release more heat and UV rays. A minimum of 21" between the bulb and the top of the turtle's shell should be closely monitored. That distance can go up to about 38", so I would say that about 30" is best for your turtle. 24" might be just a little too close. I'm not sure I would risk it, but thats up to you.

Gremlin, I think Sull was referring to jozzep's advice saying it was incorrect, not implying you were in any way wrong for asking a question.

I realize that now, but my statement stands that jozzep has well over 1,000 posts and isn't a newbie either. I'm getting annoyed by people lately.

And my question was never answered!! Oh well, I told them to hold off anyways, better safe than sorry!

I owned 3 megarays,i had several health issues with them and learned a lot from that,im talking from experience not "google".
Sorry im not trying to start an fight, but when i see comments that might put someone else turtles at risk i step in.

And if post count = experience then im on the wrong forum.

I've used a few 160-watt MVBs. All I did was follow the guidelines for distance, which was greater than that of the 100's.

The biggest difference between the two that I found was that the 160's tended to have a shorter life span, probably because of the greater amount of heat they gave off.

I was wondering why I couldn't get the T-Rex 100 watt Flood Light Bulb. I ordered something cheaper that probably won't work as well. My turtle wants heat bad. I didn't even know about the recall. What is the next best bulb to purchase. Please help.

Assuming they have them and you want another MVB, there's the MegaRay (which is made by the same company that makes the T-Rex). ZooMed makes the Powersun, but there always seems to be questions about their longevity.

What bulb did you buy?

I purchased the T-Rex 100 watt standard UV Heat Bulb from: LLLReptile.
