Is there a certain way to set a canister filter up? Mine's a Eheim 2217 for a 60 Gal tank with one male adult RES in it. A bit small of a tank, but it was the biggest one that could fit in the house.

I put it together properly and there's a strong spray from the spraybar, so I know it's sucking in water, but there's a pile of debris in the tank that's not being sucked up.

I tried to take the debris out with the python, but that didn't suck the debris up either so is it just the debris? It's mostly cuttlebone bits the turtle leaves behind, if it matters.

Or maybe the filter's just too weak for the tank?

Try siphoning out using vinyl tubing. The wide tube on a python does not provide sufficient suction for denser waste. You can also use a fish net.

I use a Fluval FX5, which keeps my water pristine, but I still get debris at the bottom. Vinyl tubing does the job for me.
