If I have a nice Canister filter, do I need to continue cleaning the tank itself? Or just clean it up every so often?
Also, what parts am I going to need to replace and how often?

You will just need to do partial water changes ever so often. The parts you need to replace are the media. It still lasts a long time though. You never really need to change biological media, but mechanical media does need to be changed once rinsing out the sponges doesn't clean them any more.

Thats weird, because the crystals taht came with it said to replace every 1-3 months.
The "Stars" that came with it said to replace every 6 months.

I feel like they say that so that you are sure to get 'best' results and that way, you are constantly giving them money.

Fortunately for us & unfortunately for them, there are much cheaper alternatives...

Savage Rock is right. The instructions aren't always right. Just take the food pellets for example. It says to keep feeding your turtles everything they can eat within an hour. That leads to some overweight turtles.
