so i have media in my xp3 but not as much as id like. what other cheap kinds of media are out there? im not looking to spend too much since they way i have it set up works, but it could be better

It all depends on what you want. I only have coarse and fine filter media in my fx5. Shop around and check prices. Such as for me I can get the course pads cheaper on ebay and everything else cheaper at my LPS.

You don't have to limit yourself to media you can buy in the pet stores.
Check out this link on all different kinds of biomedia and their effectiveness.

In mine, I've got fluval prefilter (which doesn't really work), a green scrubbie for coarse filtration, carbon (I buy loose carbon, and bag it myself, much cheaper), bioballs, and biomax.

Also, you might get lucky in your local classifieds too. I found 4 small bottles of loose carbon, the bioballs, and a media bag for $20 in the classifieds.
