Equipment Review and Discussion :: What's the best filter for a 20 long tank?

Various accessories and equipment discussed here.

Post Posted: Tue Apr 20, 2010 3:02 pm   What's the best filter for a 20 long tank?

I have a 2-3 inch musk turtle in it. He creates a LOT of waste. My RES was never so dirty. ;_; I know this forum is for RES, but it's still an aquatic turtle. Just a messy one. He has a turtle pier as a basking platform (even though he doesn't use it) and a Regent filter that is meant for a 29 gallon aquarium. It just isn't keeping the water clean at all though. The water is half way up since he's not that strong of a swimmer yet.

So any suggestions on what filter would be good for that size tank, turtle, and water level?

But THE BEST MEANING "TOP' "TOP"

Maybe your filter just needs to build Bio filtration because i had that problem :)

Would a Rena XP of some sort be too much? Bolt is a really small turtle. Well, little to me anyway. Especially compared to my RES.
RES: Turtley - about 9" (She makes it a mission to measure her. :/)
Musk: Bolt - 4.5"
Mutt: Gaviota - small

I have a Rena XP4 for my 20 gallon tank. Keeps my tank sparkling clear.
1 Mississippi Map Turtle 3.25'' (Landslide)
1 Ouachita Map Turtle 4.0'' (Hurricane)
The rest of the turtles have been adopted to good homes. :)

Well, the Renas are a bit too pricey for me right now. Which AquaClear would be good? The one for 50 gallon tanks maybe?

My LPS carries them for less then the bigger stores. If I remember correctly they're carrying the 50 gallon one for around $30.

I used to use an Aquaclear 70 in a 20-gallon long. There was one small painted and no other creatures in it.

J-wint - The filter pump that was "ment" for a 29 gallon was sized for fish by fish manufactures. I would suggest that you get a filter that pumps at least 5 times the water you have in your tank. If it is extremely dirty I would up size it a little. I would suggest a Fluval 405 which is about 300 gph. It is not a cheap filter but a good one. Good Luck!
