Equipment Review and Discussion :: Is the FX5 too big for a 29 gallon tank?

Various accessories and equipment discussed here.

Fx5 on a 29 gallon would be a blender. That is over 900 gph on a small tank would cause a lot of turmoil in the water.

Mike bro, the FX5 is only 607 GPH. Here's the Hagen's site to prove it.

Read the description.

1 Ouachita Map Turtle 4.0'' (Hurricane)
The rest of the turtles have been adopted to good homes. :)

Fx5 on 29 gallon tank - This is what I cut and pasted from that site you recommended on gph ------ 3500 L/H (924 U.S. Gal./H) ------- It is your set up and your turtle,, just don't hurt it. If you cram the filter with a lot of media and try and squelch the flow you will burn up the motor. Let us know if your turtle survives.

Another site on FX5 - 924 gph. You may end up with a scrambled turtle or another tank. A 75 gallon would be marginal but a 100 gallon would be better. Good Luck!

Dude, I posted you the specs from the official site and here's the description they give.
The Fluval FX5 is a large capacity, multi-stage external canister filter system. 607 U.S. Gal. (2,300 L)/H, enabling precise management of water conditions for aquariums as large as 400 U.S. Gal. (1,500 L).

The pump on the FX5 pushes 924 GPH when there is no media in the filter. With a full set of filter media the pump pushes roughly 607 GPH.

When using on your 29 gallon, just turn the OUT-take valve to a level where the water is not whirling around but the surface of the water is visually moving. Never turn the IN-take valve down because that can damage your impeller.

Thanks for the advice. I had been wondering about that. The filter is working great with the 29 gallon when I adjusted the outtake flow. My turtle isn't even fazed by it. :) Thank you all for your advice!

if you're going to get a filter that big you might as well upgrade to a 150 gallon stock tank or something like that...

@Herpgirl: At the time I couldn't get a bigger tank. With the size of my turtle, I needed one and I knew it. He's now in a 90g tank with the FX5 keeping it squeaky clean.

The FX5 didn't turn the tank into a blender. My turtle was really big though (7-8" at the time).
RES: Turtley - about 9" (She makes it a mission to measure her. :/)
Musk: Bolt - 4.5"
Mutt: Gaviota - small
