I just got a catalog from drs Foster and Smith and see a H.O.T. Magnum Canister Filter - flow rate of 250 for $57.99. I have two 2 40 gallon tanks and this sounds good for them. It also says snap-lock, leak-proof connectors eliminate the need for hoses or tubing. I don't really know anything much about canister filters except have heard they are good. I currently have 2 fluval 404s inside filters and would like to eliminate taking out of water to clean. Appreciate any help.

ive never heard of an H.O.T canister filter. just from looking at it and reading about it i would go with something bigger and more media options. it says its rated for only 30 gallons.

"H.O.T. Canister" -- I am not sure what that is. The HOT is a hang on tank and the canister is not and is usually stored below the tank. Which one is it? m.

it looks like a small canister that hangs on the tank. doesnt look like much room for media.

hi from what I've heard, HOT Magnum ain't all that bad. its pretty powerful for a small thing. however, I would suggest you buy the bio-wheel with it too. there isn't too much filtering media options with the HOT canister alone (I don't even know if you can do all 3 with the stock) but the bio-wheel kind of completes it-- mechanical, bio and chemical (though a bit more expensive).

however, you mentioned that you have two 40 gallons. this HOT canister filter is rated for 30 gallons. possibly try to find something even stronger, rated for 60-80 gals?

Since you have a 40 gallon tank, you need to find a filter that can pump at least 200gph for each tank.
To figure out what rating you need for a tank in the future, you tanke your tank size, say a 60 gallon, and multiply it by 5, which give you 300gph for a 60 gallon tank.

It's the "Hang on Tank Magnum Pro System Canister Filter," which looks like a Fluval Plus that has more room for biomedia. According to Drs FS site, it's good for aquariums up to 50 gallons. If you've got 40 gallon tanks (with turtles), it's not going to be powerful enough to do a decent job keeping the water clean.
