I just got my new 75 gallon form a 20 gallon and I think I am going to go all the way and get a FX5. Is this the best filter i can get? Will i need to keep the intake away from the turtles some how?

How does it compare to the 405?
I have two female red ear sliders.

Chompy- 6.0 inches

I can't give you a first hand comparison, though I think there is a topic regarding these 2 filters. Both are strong filters, though the FX5 seems to be a much better filter for turtles.

The intake will have it's own guard, but you need to make sure it's firmly attached. For additional protection, you can add a prefilter which is like a hard foam cover.

I gave a complete answer in the other thread, but I've got experience with both the FX5 and the 404 (one generation older than the 405).
I think the FX5 is superior to the 405 in almost every way. Only downside is that it's bigger, and a little bit louder than the 404, though not significantly.

I would love to get a FX5! If it was $100!

I just have to save up $70 and I'll have enough to buy my one off of Ebay for no more than $85! :)
