Has anyone ever thought of sticking a water heater in there canister filter so it's out of the tank?

I don't think that one would fit.
Not only that, but there's such a little volume of water in the canister itself that it isn't an accurate reading of the tank temperature. So while the tank may in fact be cool, the heater could be heating two gallons at a time, which wouldn't be effective.

also, how would you seal the canister with a heater cord sticking out of it.

People who have sumps put there heaters in there and it does a good job, but even a large canister(FX5) i don't think could fit a Marineland visi therm stealth in a 250watt size.

If you want the heater out of the tank, you can get a 200-300watt in line heater that hooks up to the intake, or outflow tubing outside of the tank.

Rena makes a water heater that attaches in the tubing of the canister filter or something along those lines. http://www.valuepetsupplies.com/Shop/Co ... rid/126301

Eheim make canistor filters (Eheim Thermofilters) with built in heaters. Highly desirable for fish tanks with large and boisterous fish (and even more desirable for large turtles?)

Advantages are: even heat distrubution, (no warm or cold spots) and nothing in the tank looking unsightly, being broken or burning stupid fish sleeping on them. Eheim = quality and longevity

Disadvantages are: Cost, cost and cost

Thinking of putting one on my Christmas present list for a Mississipi Map Turtle that I am being given to rehouse.

As for adapting an existing filter, I personally would see that as a recipe for empty tank and flooded floor.
