Okay, I know it is better to size a filter by the factory rating for your tank size when purchasing, but I'm just interested in filter talk.

Check this link out: http://www.animalworldnetwork.com/aqphrefixpca.html

It's showing the XP4, with an advertised GPH of 450gph, but just after that, they say the flow rate with media and tubing is 190GPH. That's one heck of a reduction in GPH! They are saying that flow rate is close to or just under the flow rate of the XP3 with media (200GPH).

I am thinking of emailing them, and asking what they used for media to test that final flow rating, or if they did not test it themselves, where they got the info from.

Interesting huh?

Chris B -- That is why the recommendation is at least 5 times the volume in the tank. Some filters don't put out what the mfg says they do. Unless the filter turns you tank into a blender I suggest that you get a much larger filter. It is the output and the filtration that you should be interested in. I have a 350 gph on a 29 gallon and it does fine. M.

That is one of the reasons I chose the Eheim. I have no idea where I read it or if it is even true but I found a reference that suggested some brands advertise their gphs closer to that obtained in real settings vs empty for factory testing. Supposedly the Eheims lost less gph in use than others. ???? Anyone else heard something like this? A flow meter could check this out.

That's very possible Melissa. however, it does depend on what media, and how much of it your using, etc.

Maybe Eheim tests their filters differently at the factory?
