When the 1 dollar per gallon sale is going on I plan on buying Yertle a 30-40 gallon and separating him from Savava.

What filter could I use? What lamps could I use? And all that other good stuff.

I like the Eheim 2217 canister filter. But Daniel has had trouble with a similar one. For the money I think it is a very good buy ($120). XP3s are well liked here as well.

I have a 40 gallon tank with a Rena XP3, the flow rate is just perfect for the tank size and my turtle has no problems swimming around. I got my XP3 on ebay for $120 with shipping, so if you are planning on spending around $100, the XP3 is good. You can find a Fluval FX5 for around $200 on ebay sometimes too.

Is it possible to get a 55 gallon tank so it lasts a little longer? I mean, what's $15 extra when it will save you at least an extra year for the next tank. The 40 gallon will only last a few months ...

Hm, I think I should try to get a 75 gallon rubbermaid with a emheim 2217. Would a rubbermaid work for a couple of years?

I wouldn't keep a rubbermaid for a couple of years, especially a large one. They just aren't made to hold that kind of weight and pressure for so long.

You seem to be chaning your mind on the type of habitat for your turtle. I would stick with a normal aquarium if possible. I would go for larger if possible to reduce the number of upgrades on tanks you will still have to do. If money is an issue, go for the biggest you can get for your dollar. As far as filter, I have a rena and a fluval. They both have different benefits and are very nice. I got mine on sale on line at petco and shopped a few pet places for pricing, look on ebay or craigslist.com for better deals. Don't forget about heater, basking area, basking lighting/heat, thermometer and any decor.

If you go with the rubbermaid, I would replace it every 2-3 months. Since the plastic those are made with really isn't made to handle the elements.
