Quite possibly. I reused the ceramic rings/stars from my XP3. I also am using the remaining activated carbon pouches from my XP3 as well.

D-3507 -- You are on the right track with the FX5 but that is not a guarantee that all your chemical levels will be perfect. You will have to work at a little but you should be fine. Just watch for the ammonia levels and cloudiness.

Try finding a dealer for service at this link

http://www.eheimlocator.com/

They also have a customer inquiry form

http://eheim.com/base/eheim/inhalte/form_customer.html

Also if you purchased your filter with a credit card or with any kind of electronic card (petco card, etc - even a check) you can probably locate a copy of your receipt, or a least evidence of the transaction date. This should be (or could be) sufficient for warranty purposes.

i have a UV sterilizer that my current filter runs through. i am worried that i wont be able to use it with my fx5 since the gal/hour is so much higher than the sterilizer says it can handle

The UV sterilizer won't be as effective when used inline with the FX5. It will only get a small percentage of what it is supposed to kill because the light won't have enough time to do it's job before the stuff is gone.

Can you just run the sterilizer alone?

Ohh okay, it doesn't have its own pump.

You could buy a powerhead for about $15 bucks, and hook it up with the sterilizer. Then you could run it about once a week or every couple days.

They are not necessary but do help if you want to kill pathogens and algae in the water. Daniel (if I remember right) had a pretty serious algae issue at one time. I would consider them if

(1) you have a tank with fish (not feeders but fish you want to keep healthy)
(2) you have serious bug or algae problems

They just conveniently help sterilize the water. I have only heard of a few folks on the forum mention that have them. In a situation where you are just setting up the tank getting everything else in order, I would put this way back on the list of "tank toys" to get. They are not that cheap and if you keep the conditions of the tank clean, dont introduce a lot of new animals, then you shouldnt have use for one.

i did have an algae bloom at one point but that is now taken care of. i have a problem with buying "tank toys". when i get bored i'll go out and get one and when i buy one i always think that if im going to get one i might as well buy a really good one.
