I've noticed lately that my Rena XP 3 filter gets sudden "bursts" from the output. It just seems like the pressure is higher every so often, and the water comes out faster.

Also, I've noticed from the beginning that my input/output hoses are brown. There is no problem with the water quality, and I've had it set up since the beginning of March. I can't remember what type of media I have in the filter. :(

Thanks!

Both of mine do that, I think it's just some air build up. The hoses will pretty much be like that, and I think most people just leave it. You can clean it out and replace them if you want too.

Yeeeah - the gunk in the hoses builds up and your filter will start making noises and whatnot because it's all blocked. I bought some of those "bottle scrubbers" or... I don't know what they're called, but they sell them at petstores... probably to clean the tubing. I stopped the filter, unhooked the hoses and cleaned them well with that brush. Hooked everything back up and the filter now works great =) Water output back to normal :)

I get that burst every time I reconnect the filter and re-prime. It goes away after a couple hours though. Is the filter motor 2 feet or more from the water surface? Also, when you prime it, you have to lift the lever on the filter, open the inlet pipe, fill with water, close the cap on the inlet pipe then push the lever down. Wait 5 minutes and then turn the filter on. After about an hour or two it's completely silent for me.

You can try to get some of that air out faster by "burping" the canister---tilting it from side to side.

You can replace the tubing for probably less than the cost of the cleaning supplies. Your local hardware store will sell the same tubing by the foot on a reel cut to length for pennies per foot. Bring in a piece of your old hose if you don't know the ID and OD and they will match it.

You can also upgrade your tubing from clear PVC tubing that stains easily to braided vinyl tubing which stays clean much longer.
