Hello!

First post here, I tried searching, but didn't come up with much. I've been looking into getting a tank for my first slider and was wondering if the Zilla tanks that are sold at most pet stores is good. Does the filter panel do more harm than good? Will I be able to use a good sized filter for the tank? Also, it looks kinda low compared to the water level in most tanks I've seen here. I may want to build an above tank basking platform in the future, so maybe I'm answering my own question haha. Does anyone have any recommendations on buying a tank online? Also, what is an average price for a new 30 or 40 gallon tank?

Thanks!!

Hey there.
As far as I can tell Zilla turtle kits aren't bad, but a bit pricey that's for sure.
The biggest one they make is the 40g I think? And it's 140+ bucks, which I find way too much since the filter that seems to come with the tank is a bit weak i guess, plus no stand and it's obviously not a definitive solution, since 40g is never enough if we're talking about RES.
Sometimes store have sales on fish tanks with a 1$/gallon offer kinda deal.
But the most sensitive solution imo, is to go with a used tank off craiglists and the like, with Zilla money you can find nice 75 or 100 gal aquariums with stands and all..

I never buy kits... especially for the turtle. I'd look for a tank on craigslist... I usually try to get it for $1/gallon, sometimes a little more depending on the size. Try to get the biggest tank you can afford right now. How big is your slider? After the tank, get a filter, I recommend a canister filter, especially for the larger tanks... it should turn over 5x the volume of water in your tank - so 75 gallon tank should have a filter rated at 375gph (turtles are messy!!). Unfortunately Petco already had their annual $1/gallon sale this year, but craigslist is usually your best bet. By the way, you don't need to buy a tank with a hood, so you should be able to find one for less.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've checked craigslist, but so far, I've only found smaller tanks. I'll keep looking though. I don't actually have a slider yet, just doing research at the moment, then I'd like to set everything up and run it before I get the little guy/girl.

Oh that's great! most people jump into turtle ownership without being prepared (myself included). I had Tomi in a large cooler for 2 days b4 I was able to get him a tank. (On my defense I rescued him from somebody who wanted to release him... ) :)
