That is so cool. I have wanted western painteds for years and years. But, I had no idea about how to obtain them.
I am very happy, though, with my RESs. I have had them for about a month and have been adapting my hot water heater room for them. {FRP water proof wall panelling, CO detector, utility sink, working on extra heat for the room, lights (uv, ir), my Eheim (waiting for the media and mech. stuff), uv meter, temp. meter, water qual. test kits, frig. for their pellets and food, microwave to heat new water for their tank, the tank and its stand (75g, craigslist), on and on.} All of the equipment I discover they need as I read everything I can online. It has been the most all-consuming, intensely fun, interesting hobby ever.
Right now the turtles live in my large master bathtub with a mechanical filter, heat, dry area and they are happy. It is so easy to drain and replace the water each day. Probably the best use the tub has had since the house was built. I am fairly anxious, though, to let the turts move into their own habitat, so I have been working on it nonstop. I doubt they like looking at the white tub all the time. Eventually, I will cover the white FRP with an outdoor scene for them to look at, since the FRP is white, just like the tub.
Apparently, this hobby has endless project possiblities. Too FUN!!
Years ago when I had turtles, I had an outdoor pond for them, so I didn't have to worry about uv/ir, and I hibernated them over the winters, so I didn't have to worry about having a large indoor aquarium. But, where I live now, foxes jump over my fence into my yard too often to think about digging a pond for my turtles. Bummer....
Take care,
V Lou
