I'm replacing my two Aquaclear 50 hang-on filters with a canister. Which do you recommend? Please comment on how QUIET it is as my turtles are right next to my bed. Also, how easy are they to maintain? How effective are they? I have three RES in a 40 gallon.

Stf - I have a feeling that you 40 gallon tank is too small for three turtles. You did not say how large they are but if they are two inches each they need a 60 gallon tank. To answer you question the Marineland 350 is a good filter however, the Fluval 405 is about the same size but a little quieter. If you up size your tank you may need a larger one. You need to have a filter that pumps 5x the water volume you have in the tank.

since i have a xp3 id vote for that but i think it gets dirty quickly or my tank is just bad. i wouldnt know though

I have an XP4 for my 75 gallon and I'm amazed at how quiet it is. It's amazing.

I suppose the XP3 must be just as quiet, since the motor is smaller.
