Equipment Review and Discussion :: Fluval 305 Media???

I'm wondering if any of the Fluval medias are better suited towards RES. I bought a Fluval 305 a couple of months ago, and it's now time to replace some of the media. When I first bought the filter, I used the media that came with it (carbon and biomax), and that has worked fine so far. But, if there is anything that is better for turtles, I'd rather use that. I know there are a lot of options for filling the 6 canisters, so I feel as though I need a little guidance. What do you folks use?

I use mostly biomedia and mechanical filtration in my canister filters. I use a little carbon too, but i find that the bio and foam are more important for keeping the water quality up.

I use prefilter, but I don't recommend it. It's too big to catch any gunk really. Carbon and biomax are good. You might want to look for some coarse filtration to put in the bottom basket, that way your carbon won't get gummed up as quickly

The 305 is a bit limited in internal space... how much water do you need to filter?

I have a fluval 305 also and i was considering getting the ammonia reducer media that fluval sells. I was also looking into the Peat to lower the hardness and ph of my water, and the Zeo-Carb to also help with the ammonia. The reason for all of this is that my filter, even after doing partial water changes for the last 3 weeks that i've had the filter, my ammonia, and ph are extremely high. I know i have to wait it out and let the media get some beneficial bacteria on it, and i haven't disturbed that, but it's driving me nuts. if anybody has any ideas if these are beneficial sources of media, maybe it would be good to buy for a turtle tank? Seeing as Ammonia usually increases because they are such messy eaters...
