He's full of crap. However, you cannot use fluorescent bulbs of any kind on fixtures that have a dimmer switch. FL/CFL needs the full 110 volts, an dimmers dim the voltage.

The pet store clerk is what many call a "pesky salesman".

It is very important that fluorescent and Mercury Vapor bulbs are not on a dimmer switch because they have their own ballasts which are designated for 120 or 220 volts. This doesn't mean that they can not be used in a dome clamp fixture.

Good luck, and have fun.

Yes. Perfect. I use that exact one myself.

edit- check out http://www.drsfostersmith.com for great selection and good prices. I've never had a problem with them with 15+ orders.

I really like the 'sun domes' from flukers. They're basically just clamp lamps minus the clamp, and they're much longer so they totally cover the sides of even a mercury vapor bulb. I have my lamps hung from the ceiling above my tank, so that glare was really annoying.

You answered a question I've been willing to ask. I think the MVBs are hurting my vision. Thanks.

Indeed any bulb that emits UV light is bad for your vision, and your skin.
