Feeding and Nutrition :: yummy dock

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Chong is chewing the dock away. I know I've read something about calcium supplements and cuttle bone. I was at Wal-Mart yesterday and I really don't know what cuttle bone looks like, they had a gazillion bones and chew things...

Can someone post a pic of what I need to get? Is there something better than the cuttle bone?

He's chewing right at the hole where the piece that holds the dock in place goes... I'm afraid that id he keeps it up he'll ruin the dock.

Stupid Chong...

Here's an example from Petco:

They're in the bird section of the store. They're usually packaged in plastic, hanging on hooks.

Right. There's a very thin translucent layer just under the surface on one side. It's like plastic. It's kind of hard to get it off. You can pry it with a knife. You'll break the bone into pieces in the process and that's ok. It's better to feed it to your turtle in pieces. Some turtles (like mine) prefer their cuttlebone in a veggie clip to anchor it when they try to bite it. When a bone has been in the water too long - and it's soggy or sinks to the bottom - then the turtle won't eat it and you have to take it out and replace it. This will happen after 3 or 4 days.

You don't have to put the whole bone in at once - just some pieces.

Your turtle will thank you!

well i got the cuttle bone and the veggie clip... i tried to peel that backing and like you said, the thing fell apart... i managed to get a large piece and put it in the water with the clip... prompting the curiosity of cheech & chong immediately, who then proceeded to bite the clip rather than the bone...

You could also break up thinnish head size pieces and let a few float in the tank.
