Feeding and Nutrition :: difference between romaine and green leaf lettuces?

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Post Posted: Fri May 25, 2007 1:40 am   difference between romaine and green leaf lettuces?

i have PLENTY of romaine in the fridge..and i usually give koopa a piece (of romaine) about 3 X 3 inches once a week, just because i read that romaine is a "Moderate (Limited usage)" food for RES..and i dont have any red or green leaf lettuce right now..been giving him carrots once a week too..and i tried dandelion leaves, but he wasnt feelin it..but im wondering if i can offer him romaine more often?.how "MODERATE"ly should this group of good be offered?.and how much should i be giving him?..whats the difference between the red and green leaves and the romaine lettuces?

any help would be appreciated

thanks

Red Leaf and Green Leaf have more nutrition and vitamins in them while Romaine has very little. Reading Romaine is ok as long as your turtle still gets the necessary nutrition.

Lol I ran out of red/green leaf lettuce too, and Im just feeding romaine, carrot and dandelions, too now. Try giving your turtle the dandelion leaves that have no hair on them

haha thanks again tenodera...what time is it up in Canada?..and alright, i might up it to twice a week, its a really small portion though, so im sure hell be straight, but he just loves it so much!..actually i will probably have green leaf by then..and i tried offering both kinds of the dandelion leaves and he didnt touch them for 2 days, so i took them out..i offered him a dandelion bud ( a flower that didnt flower yet) and he did the craziest thing with his hands, so i took all the dandelion related stuff out..haha..

You don't want to use too much romain lettuce though since it contains more phosphorous than calcium. You want to achieve a 2:1 ratio of calcium to phosphorous in any reptiles diet.

I feed romaine a lot since we always have some in the house for us humans. :) But I always buy bags of Field Greens and Spring Mix which contains a large variety of the healthier stuff. I go through it so quickly between all my different animals so I often resort to the romain when I run out of the other stuff and until I can make it to the grocery store.

Sheba loves collards, so I buy those a lot for her & alternate with romaine. All greens last longer if you wrap them loosely in a plastic veggie bag & keep in the fridge.
