Feeding and Nutrition :: They ate their first grape!

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Post Posted: Mon Jan 29, 2007 9:47 am   They ate their first grape!

Recently, I have been trying to feed my turtles fruits and veggies seeing if they will like it or not ( since mine are still a bit young). I put a bit of a grape in and all 3 of my RES dove in for them and in about 20 seconds that grape was devoured! Im gonna go to the store today and get some more fruit to see which ones they like! just thought i would like to share this with everyone!

I would stick with the recommendations on this list. Fruit offered once a month. Too much sugar is not good, and grapes are pretty high in sugar.

I have a question, do the carrots need to be cooked or can i just wash it and then serve it? I was thinking they have to be cooked first or else it'll be tough for the turtle to chew it

I always cook my carrots before feeding to my Sheba, but other people on this board have had success with raw carrots (wash them well). Turts can nip at a carrot, the same way they nip at the hard cuttlebone.

My turtles will eat raw carrots, it varies from "turtle to turtle." I remember how my turtles used to gobble up peeled grapes everyday until I found out how sugary they were. whoops!

Mine will eat the carrots raw or cooked. I usually cut a baby carrot in 1/6 lengthwise. They can eat them better that way.

I cut baby carrots into flat slices the long way, about 1/16" thick, it makes it easy for him to bite off chunks. He's had them both raw and cooked and doesn't seem to prefer one or the other, so he gets them raw. He does love his carrots.

And yes, they will choke! The two times I've given Napoleon meat, he's gone completely insane and tried to take it whole. I figured he would nibble like he does on his veggies. I look over and he's swimming around with his mouth clamped around a peice of chicken or tuna, unable to open his mouth any further to let go of it. I ended up having to pick it out with my fingers just so he could shut his mouth. Poor baby, I learned my lesson...small chewable bits are best.
